Honey – The amazing natural food
Honey is a powerful health food which contains a number of essential nutrients.
Uni-floral or Mono-floral honey is honey collected from the nectar of a single species of flower. It is produced by careful attention to beekeeping methods, such as the placement of hives in areas with high concentration of the desired floral source.
Multi-floral honey, popularly known as ‘thousand flower honey’, comes from the nectar collected by bees from crop plants and plants that grow in meadows and forests. It has a very tender flavor and is rich in nourishing elements. Man has prized it as a sweetener and food since the days of the Stone Age hunter gatherers. The viscid liquid is produced by bees from the nectar they collect from flowers — a single tablespoon of honey requiring the nectar of some eighteen thousand flowers. The honey sugars break down into substances that inhibit the growth of bacteria, and the ancients used it to treat wounds, burns and skin problems. Besides sugars (about 75 per cent) and water, it contains small amounts of calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, sulfur, phosphorus and protein.
Traditionally, honey has been used as a ‘tonic’ or ‘pick-me-up’, and in the treatment of Anemia, Kidney complaints and circulation problems. Its soothing effects are well known. It may also help Hay fever victims.
